LAINIE: 25-35, Natural science teacher. Married to Michael. Trying to cope with not knowing the state of her kidnapped husband.
MICHAEL: 25-35. Teacher and photographer. Married to Lainie. Kidnapped by Shi’ite terrorists in Lebanon. Composes letters to Lainie in his head.
WALKER: 25-45. Journalist. An overly-ambitious type, attempting to get a good story from Lainie and convince her to speak out against the government’s ineptitude and inaction.
ELLEN: 40-60. State Department representative. Cooly efficient. Tries to make Lainie aware of the big picture and keep her calm and quiet.
The two rooms of the title are a windowless cell in Beirut, where an American hostage is being held by Arab terrorists, and a room in his home in the United States, which his wife has stripped of furniture so that, at least symbolically, she can share his ordeal. The room in their house houses imaginary discussions between Michael and Lainie and real-life discussions between Lainie and an ambitious journalist and cold government official.
